About Target Time Defense

The idea for creating a new indoor shooting range and firearms store developed during a crisis in our family. In the fall of 2012 our 23 year old son was diagnosed with lymphoma. He was being treated at KU Medical Center. One evening, my wife was at the hospital with our son and I was in my office at Village Gardens in Blue Springs, MO. At around 8:30 pm she called to tell me that she was leaving the hospital and asked if I would stay on the phone while she walked to her car in the parking garage across the street. I did, and she reached her car without incident (months later our son finished his treatments and has since been declared cancer free).

Staying on the phone with my wife while she walked to her car got me thinking (not for the first time) about how vulnerable people, and particularly women, can be. With Christmas approaching these thoughts evolved into the idea to purchase my wife a concealed/carry class as a gift. I did this and we both took the CCW course a month later.

As new CCW Permit holders and "newbies" to firearms, we wanted to hone our target shooting skills and become more comfortable with our tools. I was very surprised to discover that the 10 lane indoor range at Crossfire Recreational Center on Truman Rd in Independence was the only indoor range in Eastern Jackson County. At the time, I wasn't aware of the four indoor lanes at Bass Pro Shop. The next closest public indoor ranges are in Claycomo, Kearney and on the Kansas side of the metro area.

I quickly recognized this as an opportunity. In fact, I couldn't believe that no one else had identified the opportunity or was doing anything about it. I have spent the last 15 months learning, observing, researching, identifying a location and working with the City of Blue Springs.

Target Time Defense will offer a "next generation" indoor shooting range, gun shop and self defense training facility to the under served Eastern Jackson County market.  Target Time Defense will provide a bright, safe, clean, family friendly atmosphere to enjoy the shooting sports, learn, and hone personal defense skills.

The transformation

Take a look at this slideshow that shows the transformation of the former All-American Fitness building into Target Time Defense.

This building was built in 1980 as a Racquetball Ball Club. It's original name was Center Court Racquetball Club. After five years of operation, all but three of the Racquetball courts were removed, the building was converted to a Fitness Club and an Olympic size swimming pool was installed on the East side of the building. Eventually the name was changed to All-American Fitness.

All-American Fitness operated under a variety of owners through June of 2012, at which time it closed for good.

I scouted many locations in and around Blue Springs. I finally chose this building because of it's great location, visibility and ease of access. Demo work began in the Spring of 2015 and construction began in the middle of July. Target Time Defense opened for business on January 10th 2016.
